It's hard to see it in the pic.. but it says Lexington 3 miles <- and Dover 8 miles-> actually the pointers are hands!  this is at a old house.. and when I say old.. I mean still has slaves quarters and summer kitchen and various other outbuildings still on the property! (as  do several old houses round here.. ) This marker is resting against the slaves quarters.

anyway.. this is just outside of town  heading East ..

I heard a story , which I need to check out , is that where our present day post office is located , used to be a cemetary.  Now that's possible as there is a  old church located behind the present day post office and a old church located on the corner across from it.. now that  just seems to bring up images of " Poltergiest" !

but now I know what happens to the mail.. lmao!

I been reading a book on Lexington History the last couple days and learned that where the present day post office is was a cemetary before 1840.. in 1840 the cemetarty location was moved to where it is presently. (which is only about 3 blocks away from where I live) . My house stands on the property of a house on Southe street whose property reached from 13th to 20th and South street to where the cemetary is.. this was corn field.. and also the site of a battle between the Confeds and Union soldiers during a battle that took place in the Civil war. That house still stands to this date as one of the oldest in Lexington. just about a block and half from my house. I have found bullets in my yard when we were digging for the basement..

There are more than a hundred homes still standing from pre civil war in Lexington.

In 1866 there was a black school built just behind where the post office now stands.. and is still there and being renovated at the moment.

The original post office is gone but was on Broadway..and we had the Pony Express here also..

The second post office is on 13th and Main which now houses the School Board. That was in 1918. Also in 1918, the High school stood on the property where the post office now stands.

One of the four banks in town was robbed by Jesse James who hung out at the Hicklin house (on which the marker pictured above is located on). Apparantly he was good friends with the family. That bank still stands but is now a antique shop with an apartment above .

I find History very interesting and if there was a time machine that could take me back .. I would be the first in line so I could see what it was like then..
