When you leave on a trip, toss an old shoe behind you for good fortune.
If you have a rooster, never leave on a trip before he crows.
Do not start a journey on a Friday.
Try to never leave on the 13th of the month.
Postpone a journey and you will never make it.
Never look back a your house when you leave it.
If you sneeze seven times you will take a long journey.
Itching feet means you will go to a strange country. If your right foot itches you will have a good journey, if your left one itches your trip will end in sorrow.
If you see geese overhead as you depart that is a good sign.
If you see hogs on the road, turn back.
Rabbits crossing your path is bad luck, if they run alongside the path you are on, it is good luck.
If you see a whirlwind-even a small one- as you leave on the trip, go back home.
You'll have a long, happy journey if a bird droppings land on your head.
If you find a pin in the road, pick it up, it is good luck!
If you see a spoon, let it be. Some folks tend to throw a spoon out when their luck is going badly in hopes that a passerby will pick it up and transfer the bad luck to them.
When you pass a cross road, slap your right leg for luck.
Hold your breath while passing a cemetary.
To make a guest leave, turn a broom upside down behind the door.
Always tend to your traveling companions, be they horse, dog, woman, or fiend, before you tend to yourself.
